The Erasmus Bridge is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge that crosses the Nieuwe Maas in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. It was designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel (UNStudio) and named after humanist and theologian ‘Desiderius Erasmus Roterdamus’ (1466 - 1536)2. Construction began in 1986 and was completed in 1996. The construction of the Erasmus bridge cost in excess of 165 million euros.
